In recent years there has been a renewal of interest by professional historians in regional, local, and community history. King's work falls within this genre. King (Eastern Michigan Univ.) covers in minute detail the 70-year history of Plymouth Colony. His extensive endnotes, ranging from a minimum of 35 to a maximum of 102, show that his research was meticulous and that he has used all of the pertinent primary material and secondary works. The notes also expand on information that does not properly fit into the narrative. Undergraduate students interested in the topic will find the bibliographical essay valuable. Although the study is informative, it is noninterpretive and does not break new ground. As such, it will be most useful to nonhistorians or to undergraduate students who have an interest in the history of Plymouth Colony.
