America? This is a country where the children educate their parents."" That sentiment and others (familiar from World of Our Fathers, A Bintel Brief, and similar sources) are enunciated in this paean to Jewish immigration and settlement. Old photographs capture the changing scene: beards become shorter, dresses livelier, old age homes are established. Shulman's comments are hardly original but the sepia pictures--of Orchard Street and agricultural communities, pushcarts and union meetings--have an undiminished charm.
