Edited by two major scholars in the field, this book is in the MacArthur Foundation Series on Mental Health and Development. Monahan and Steadman conceptualize risk factors across four domains: Part 1 focuses on dispositional risk factors (an individual's predispositions, traits, tendencies, or styles) and includes chapters on anger, impulsivity, and psychopathy. Part 2 deals with clinical risk factors, reflecting types and symptoms of mental disorder. Here, chapters focus on epidemiology of mental disorders, special symptoms patterns (delusions and hallucinations), and personality disorders. Chapters in Part 3 treat historical risk factors (past experiences or events that may predispose a person to act violently) as well as contextual risk factors (aspects of the person's current environment that may be conducive to violent behavior). The final chapter describes research integrating these four domains of risk factors and initial results from the work of the MacArthur Research Network on Mental Health and the Law. A work of great benefit. Graduate through professional. C. S. Widom; SUNY at Albany
