In this work, Bruhns provides an overview of the complex prehistory of a vast continent. As Bruhns (San Francisco State Univ.) admits, it is "an extremely general and very incomplete" attempt, albeit a very laudable and successful one. The illustrations are a real boon, for many of them appear here for the first time. Appendixes A through F list the major botanical cultigens originating in South America. The text is nontechnical and aimed at general and undergraduate readership. Bibliographic references are organized by chapter; maps and diagrams are clear and to the point. A solid introductory book for generalists and for archaeologists trying to keep up with developments outside their areas of specialization. G. A. Konitzky; Clarion University of Pennsylvania
