This volume is a synthesis of the accumulated oceanographic data of the Southern California Bight. An earlier publication, K.O. Emery's The Sea off Southern California (1960), reviewed the physical, chemical, and geological knowledge of the area. This comprehensive volume is rich with historical and biological data. Individual authors carefully collate and integrate findings over time and correlate these changes with increasing human exploitation. The contents are organized into 14 chapters, each written by one or more outstanding scientists. It is apparent that these scientists read each others' material, for there is linkage across disciplines that extends the interpretations of the ecological data. A valuable tool to those trying to understand the effects of humans on this ecosystem. Recommended for resource managers and for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students. J. G. Hoff; University of MassachusettsDSDartmouth
