James-novelist, short story writer, critic, essayist, and playwright-loved wines, witticisms, and Italy. This experiential travelog, written between 1869 and 1907, takes one back to a slower time when a worldly American expatriate was able to explore his own passions and love of history and culture amid the exuberant and energetic Italians. Today's reader can enjoy James's lavish literary descriptions of Venice, Rome, Florence, the Bay of Naples, and the countryside in between during Italy's early years as a secular state. His essays and letters invoke not only the sights, sounds, and smells of Italy but especially the feel of the country he knew so intimately. An unusual guidebook; recommended for public libraries.-Janine Reid, Jefferson Cty. P.L., Lakewood, Col. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
