Geiringer, one of the outstanding musicologists active in the mid-20th century, completed these autobiographical memoirs shortly before his death in 1989. Perhaps best known for his still-venerable biographies of Haydn ( Haydn: A Creative Life ) and Brahms ( Brahms: His Life and Work ), which first appeared in 1932 and 1933, respectively, he recounts highlights of his own distinguished career at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, at Boston University, and, ultimately, at the University of California at Santa Barbara. A sanguine temperament and humane outlook pervade this book, which make it exceptionally enjoyable to read. In particular, aspiring musical scholars in search of successful role models could do worse than to start with Geiringer. Recommended for subject collections.-- E.
