A revision of the 1986 German-language edition, this book provides a close analysis and thoughtful assessment of fin-de-si`ecle Viennese artists whose work is included in the broad surveys of this period, including Kirk Varndoe's Vienna 1900 (CH, Feb'87) and Nicholas Powell's The Sacred Spring (CH, Ap'75). Those books offer a picturesque overview of early Austrian modernism; this book focuses on the painting and graphics of early Austrian expressionism (particularly Gerstl, Kokoschka, Schile, Sch"onberg, and Kubin) and the artistic and cultural forces that shaped it (including, for example, an enlightening discussion of the influence of dance on these artists' work). The black-and-white illustrations, extensive notes, and bibliography arranged by subject are useful features of this solid study, which is a needed supplement to the available surveys on the subject, and so is highly recommended to college libraries.
