Vogel has written a clear, largely accessible, and illuminating work. His method involves surveying the critical literature's reaction to Heidegger and a brief comparison with Sartre on the notion of authenticity. This too is helpful; though, by relying on this approach, this small book does not treat the text of Being and Time in a conscientiously determined manner nor locate the ethical discussion through the deeper discussion of Heidegger's ontological views. Yet, within his chosen approach, Vogel is very successful in raising important questions and variant understandings of what Heidegger accomplished. Strongly recommended, especially for those who come to the subject without much reading in the subject. Undergraduate; graduate; faculty; general. M. A. Bertman; emeritus, SUNY at Potsdam
