German U-boats seemed on the verge of cutting Allied supply lines between Europe and North America in March 1943. In the succeeding months, Allied convoys battled German submarine "wolf packs" in one of the most significant campaigns of WW II. Syrett (Queens College, CUNY) has written an important, detailed history of the Allied war against the U-boats, a war that raged across the North Atlantic, April-December 1943. Syrett describes the battles between Allied convoys and the German U-boats fought day and night, under the sea, in the skies, and on the ocean, ending in the defeat of the U-boats by December 1943. Syrett credits the victory to Allied superiority in cryptography, technology, strategy, and tactics coupled with German mistakes and intelligence failures. It is regrettable that illustrations have been omitted because most readers will have seen neither a convoy nor the types of vessels mentioned in Syrett's fine book. Strongly recommended for all collections in WW II and naval history. K. Eubank; emeritus, Queens College, CUNY
