An excellent compendium of techniques and strategies for implementing critical reading in all subject areas. Each chapter is solidly grounded in theory as well as research from the recent scholarship available in content area reading, and each includes an extensive bibliography for further study. Especially useful are the final chapters with specific strategies for various content fields: the arts, English, science, and history. Included in the techniques for teaching critical reading are those for teaching writing across the curriculum. Notably missing from the practical application of strategies is information on use in vocational/technical classrooms. This text could be used for undergraduate courses in content area reading or as a supplement/reference work for both graduate and undergraduate reading courses. In addition it could also serve as a supplement to teaching methods courses from any academic discipline. It is certainly a useful work for university libraries to hold. Especially user friendly is the fact that technical vocabulary is used only when necessary, even in the theoretical and research discussions. Useful index. Recommended. B. L.
