The National Science Foundation allocated funds from the Human Genome Project for study of the legal and ethical issues involved. This book, and the 1992 conference sponsored by the AAAS and the American Bar Association, are among the results. (There are some 1993 references in the book.) The writers are expert, and the writing is accessible to nonscientists, nonlawyers, and nonethicists. There are four sections: "Family Relationships and Social Policy"; "Privacy and Confidentiality Issues for Genetic Testing"; "Linking Genetics, Behavior and Responsibility"; "Genetic Testing and Determination of Property Rights." (The last section is on patenting of genetic discoveries and techniques.) This reviewer has taught bioethics and genetics for several years but found several eye-openers, and it is difficult to imagine any reader who would not find several new thoughts in the book. There is some serious attention to religious as well as legal and scientific matters. Every academic library needs this book. All levels. M. LaBar; Central Wesleyan College
