Edited by two British historians, this work contains 20 essays by different academics on the history and politics of the Conservative Party throughout the 20th century. Each contributor has written on an important theme within the context of three main areas: the composition and structure of the party; its ideas, policies, and actions in office, which the party has occupied for over 60 years since 1900; and its public image and sources of support in the country. The book, over 800 pages, is a comprehensive and authoritative work. In addition to the well-written essays, it also contains a wealth of information and tables on the office holders and election results of the party, illustrations of the major leaders, and a select chronology listing the significant events and developments in the history of the party. In general, it will interest both nonspecialist readers as well as students of British politics. The 45-page critical bibliography will be particularly valuable for researchers.
