Zinser has written an objective and comprehensive review of the history, geography, and administration of US public land, including the results of more than 160 years of struggle between the protectors and exploiters of public land. Included are chapters that define and summarize recreational resources, the American conservation movement, the National Park System, the National Forest System, the National Wildlife System, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the administration of federal Indian land. Also included are 24 appendixes comparing the different categories of public land and 18 maps showing their locations. Despite the title, this is not a book for readers planning vacations, but a textbook for university geography courses and an authoritative reference on the location and regulation of public land.
