Popa and Horn (both Univ. of California, Davis) have compiled an interesting and carefully edited bibliography on all aspects of social, economic, and political life in Romania during Ceau, sescu's regime. Only titles published outside Romania in English, French, or German are included. A sample indicated that approximately 20 percent of the works cited are not in English; translations of the titles are given in brackets. Materials published during the existence of the regime (1965-89) are thoroughly covered; some titles published between 1990 and 1992 are also included, but many substantial studies have appeared since the press date. Citations are numbered consecutively in topical chapters ("Economic and Business Conditions," "Government, Politics, and Domestic Affairs," "Protest, Dissent, and Revolution," etc.). Author and subject indexes complete the volume. Annotations are brief but very informative. It is surprising that the other fairly recent bibliography aimed at an English-speaking audience, Andrea and Dennis Deletant's Romania (CH, Nov'86), is not cited; it is a useful supplement because it includes English-language publications from the Romanian government. Highly recommended for all public and academic collections. V. W. Hill; University of Wisconsin-Madison
