Groeschel's charming little introduction to St. Augustine as a spiritual writer is something like a portable tutorial, full of helpful hints and suggestions for further reading as well as insights that are accessible without being condescending. The author approaches his subject with Franciscan humility and humor that is most appropriate for an introduction. The tone is conversational, integrating selections from a wide range of Augustine's work and a healthy sampling of the great variety of available translations with Groeschel's own reflections. The book ends, appropriately, with a reading program instead of a bibliography; it is likely also to end with readers inspired to pursue it. (Reviewed July 1995)0824525051Steve Schroeder
