Henbest and Couper have written a unique book for a general audience, which pulls together current understanding of our home galaxy. They begin with a historical guide to the personalities who are responsible for attaining this knowledge. Richly illustrated and written in an inviting style, it takes the reader on a detailed tour of our side of the galaxy (only as it has been clearly mapped thus far). The authors show how observations from all wavelengths (radio, visible, X-ray, etc.) must be combined to discover the true layout of the galaxy.
