Cheremisinoff's timely choice of title reflects well his topics, organized into eight chapters that discuss water sources and uses, water quality and properties, chemical properties, examination of water, water supply purification, groundwater, industrial and commercial requirements, and cooling waters. The main focus is on water quality and water supply, with a good description of water quality standards, chemical and physical properties of common water sources, analytical procedures for common analytes, water purification procedures, and water for industrial and commercial uses. The book, however, is lacking in three respects: there are practically no references; it is poorly organized; and some figures and tables are repeated verbatim but have different numbers, while others are not labeled at all (these last two issues are distracting and frustrating.) Related topics may be discussed in several chapters; it is difficult to glean pertinent facts on any given topic without reading the whole book. The lack of references, including those for several tables of values, limits the book's use. The general reader may find certain topics insufficiently explained, while an advanced reader would find others unnecessarily elementary. Community college; pre-professional. N. W.
