Novelist-playwright Tremblay, a well-established writer in his native Quebec, is less well known in the United States. Originally pub~lished in French in 1978~, this new, recently translated and revised English edition of his entertaining novel is the first volume in a series of five volumes entitled The Chronicles of the Plateau Mont-Royale, profiling life in a working-class neighborhood~ in Montreal. In this semi~autobiographical~ account, the author skillfully and delightfully sketches the characters on Fabre Street, the street (or similar to a street) on which Tremblay grew up. The ~time is 1942, and the action centers on three sisters, Rose, Violette, and Mauve, who are all pregnant along with most of the Fabre Street women. As the sisters knit and view the color and movement of life around them, they reflect on their own lives as well as those of their neighbors. Highly entertaining. ~--Jane Jurgens
