This 7,654-item, unannotated bibliography is devoted to the Slavic cultures of the "forgotten subcontinent" of the Balkans, excluding those of Croatia and Slovenia. Roth and Wolf (Munich Univ.) have addressed folk culture in the broadest sense, bringing together a wide array of sources that cut across many disciplines. The South Slavica Collection at Munich's Bavarian State Library served as the primary resource for the bibliography, although major collections in Germany, Great Britain, and the US were also consulted. Citations date from the 16th century to the present and are arranged alphabetically by author in 16 thematic sections and 231 subsections. An author index is also included. The bibliography has a "Western" perspective, since it is limited to materials in English, French, and German, the languages considered to be accessible to most scholars. Although all three languages are well represented, German language materials are the most numerous. Recommended for Balkan, Slavic, and folk culture collections at the upper-division undergraduate level and above. R. Nash; University of Nebraska at Omaha
