Summary: | Fort Sill was located in southwestern Oklahoma in the heart of the old Kiowa-Comanche Indian country. From 1833 until 1875 the fort was in constant conflict with the marauding Indians. The U.S. Army, militia of Kansas, Texas Rangers, and white pioneers and traders on the one hand were arrayed against the fierce and heroic bands of the Kiowas, Comanches, Arapahoes, and Kiowa-Apaches on the other. During this time period the fort was involved in strife from Kansas to Mexico. Many officers who fought in these battles were provided with a kind of training that served them well during the Civil War. |
