Pollak, a sociologist and director of research at the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris until his death in 1992 from AIDS, was responsible for studying prevention activities in homosexual men as a part of the collective effort of Concerted Action, established in 1989 by the European Community with the aim of assessing AIDS prevention in member countries. He discusses the context of prevention and its instruments; analyzes methodologies of assessment research undertaken in Western Europe and their result in terms of behavior change; and provides information on the successes and failures of prevention as shown by an analysis of epidemiological data. Pollak was keenly aware of the specific problems for prevention, health information, education, and evaluation as a result of the concentrated diffusion of HIV infection in a few marginalized groups. His analysis of the similarities and differences between Western European countries in terms of sociocultural issues, policies, and attitudes further illustrates the difficulties in developing prevention strategies among this targeted population. Anyone interested in AIDS prevention or gay studies will find this informative book a valuable resource. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. J. M.
