Kouzes and Posner (Santa Clara Univ.) have updated their well-known book, which many consider the preeminent guidebook and research-based study on leadership. In this new edition (3rd ed., CH, Jan'03, 40-2890), chapters are updated with current research, new case studies, inspiring vignettes about the ways in which ordinary people have overcome adversity to accomplish extraordinary things, and myriad interviews with contemporary leaders at all levels in a variety of organizations. The 13 easy-to-read chapters are divided into seven sections: "What Leaders Do and What Constituents Expect," "Model the Way," "Inspire a Shared Vision," "Challenge the Process," "Enable Others to Act," "Encourage the Heart," and "Leadership for Everyone." For the authors, leadership is more than effective business managerial talent. Rather, from parenting to public service, it is a universal ideal that goes beyond the traditional challenges of corporate goal congruence to the commitment to personal self-development and the development of leadership in others. For those aspiring to be leaders, this will be a persuasive, inspiring book. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers, all undergraduate students, and practitioners. S. R. The myth of leadership holds that it is a mystical quality possessed by a few charismatic individuals. This book shows in great detail that leadership can be learned that it encompasses a set of processes and behavior that can be consciously nurtured. From extensive studies and interviews, the authors have found that good leaders seek challenges, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act independently, function as role models, and encourage colleagues and associates by giving rewards. This profile is set in contrast to managers who control and restrict. Chock-full of pertinent on-the-job examples, this volume shows the many ways leaders can encourage their employees to greater productivity. A solid choice for the In Search of Excellence crowd. Notes; to be indexed. BK. 658.4'092 Leadership / Executive ability / Management [OCLC] 87-45428

An inspirational and practical handbook, this expanded revision of a bestselling manual originally published in 1987 offers sound advice to corporate leaders and entrepreneurs, to managers and employees and to aspiring leaders in retail, manufacturing, government, community, church and school settings. Drawing on interviews and a questionnaire survey of more than 3000 leaders, the authors identify five fundamental practices of exemplary leadership: challenge the status quo; inspire a shared vision; enable others to act; model the way forward by setting an example; tap individuals' inner drives by linking rewards and performance. Kouzes, chairman and CEO of TPG/Learning Systems, and Posner, managing partner of Santa Clara University's Executive Development Center in California, write insightful, down-to-earth, jargon-free prose. This new edition has been substantially updated to reflect the challenges of shrinking work forces, rising cynicism and expanded telecommunications. An appendix includes the author's Leadership Practices Inventory, a tool for assessing leadership behavior. 75,000 first printing; Executive Program Book Club main selection; author tour. (Sept.) Kouzes gives workshops in executive development and managing growth companies; Posner conducts seminars in communication, group dynamics, etc. Their excellent book on leadership for business executives covers identifying and developing leadership qualities, building commitment into action, and other important topics. In addition to discussing the theoretical foundations of leadership, the authors use many examples from work situations to demonstrate application. In a field in which many books are available, this one is readable, interesting, and up-to-date. Highly recommended for collections serving business executives and students. Grace Klinefelter, Ft.
