Ponterotto (Fordham Univ.) has assembled an impressive array of leading authorities and emerging scholars to produce the most comprehensive sourcebook available today for the teaching and practice of multicultural counseling. The book is organized around issues, including professional issues, racial identity development, supervision and training, strategies for practitioners, research, and two lengthy sections devoted to critical and emerging topics. These include personality and intelligence assessment, health counseling, group work in multicultural settings, and the implications of the breakdown of authority for the development of young African American males. The counseling profession has acknowledged the importance of the subject in recent years: some 87 percent of training programs now offer at least one multicultural course. With great potential as a catalyst for more substantive integration of multicultural perspectives, this book's utility is heightened by thoughtful historical overviews, inclusion of training modules and case studies in the chapters, and appendixes with competencies and standards, ethical principles, and guidelines for providers.
