The various authors of this book bring a wealth of knowledge about exercise metabolism, well edited by Hargreaves. As stated in the preface, this book is directed to the fairly advanced reader. Although a background in exercise biochemistry is not required, it would certainly prove beneficial for ease in understanding. (Indeed, this book could serve as a text for an advanced exercise biochemistry course.) The authors cover metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids from virtually all aspects, with an emphasis on reviewing human research. Particularly well done were chapters on adaptations to endurance training and anaerobic metabolism during high-intensity exercise. However, sometimes the book tends to read like a thesis review of literature. Some well-chosen figures would have helped to enliven the presentation as well as to enable the reader to clearly understand some of the points made. Nevertheless, this is a well-written, up-to-date review of metabolic responses during exercise. Graduate; faculty. R. L. Jensen; Northern Michigan University
