Tyler is a distinguished professor of pharmacognosy (study of medicinal plants). He, and others in the same field, have seen medicinal plants moved to an inferior position, compared to synthetic drugs, over the last 40 years; they wish to restore herbal remedies to greater use and respect. To do this, these scholars have proposed a separate compendium where herbal drugs will be described along with the diseases they affect and the mode of administration. The first part of this book describes the status of herbals in this country and others; the rest of the book presents a compendium-like group of herbals selected on the basis of their importance to medicine. Of primary interest to pharmacognosists, as well as medicinal chemists and botanists. Upper-division undergraduate through faculty.
