Moore is an outstanding British astronomer with an extensive record of publications, television programs, and international awards. This book is at present the only one that is dedicated solely to the subject of the planet Neptune. It is a succinct summary of the current state of knowledge of this remote member of the solar system; and it also includes a brief review of the sun and its family. Moore covers nicely the historical aspects of the planet's discovery along with some of its prediscovery observation records. One chapter is devoted to Triton and Nereid, the satellites that attend Neptune, and another discusses the Voyager spacecraft's journey. Although the book is unique in many aspects, much of what is about to be learned about Neptune from the Voyager flyby may seriously date this book. It is nonetheless recommended for its historical content, ease of reading, and extensive bibliogaphy. The illustrations and print quality are exceptional and most appealing. Geared to the intelligent general reader, the book would serve as well in a public library as in a college library. -B. D. Dod, Mercer University
