From the beginning of the last decade until the early part of this one, Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path), a Peruvian Marxist guerilla movement, seemed poised, with singular violence and slaughter, to take over the government of Peru. Stern has compiled the first thorough, but admittedly not comprehensive, annotated bibliography of books and periodical articles published in Peru and the US on this pivotal movement. For 1,185 entries, organized in chapters by year of publication, Stern's critical annotations, generally of at least 200 words, provide both a sense of the history and development of Sendero Luminoso and a thoughtful overview of it. The work is well indexed (author and subject), facilitating its use for both reference and research, as one would expect from this publisher. Use is enhanced by a list of acronyms and terms, a chronology, and a note on sources allowing one to track future Shining Path developments. This last, given the vicissitudes of Latin American politics, may prove the most timely, reinforcing the ongoing relevance of Stern's work. Highly recommended for academic collections. E. A.
