This annotated bibliography of resources useful to librarians and teachers working with students in grades 6-12 includes assessments of more than 600 books, periodicals, and electronic databases that will help educators select print and nonprint resources. Most of the sources listed have copyrights between 1988 and 1993, with some earlier works listed that have not been revised or updated. Entries are divided into seven general topics, and subdivided by type of resource or subject area covered. The sections include research material, selection aids for print and audiovisual materials, and the longest sections on specific genres or subjects. Titles falling under more than one category are cross-referenced with the full annotation appearing in the primary location. Author, title, and subject indexes also refer to material only mentioned in an annotation. A publisher's directory includes phone numbers. Bibliographic citations include publication information, price, and ISBN. Periodical citations also include subscription price, number of issues per year, address, and phone number. Annotations include scope of the work, arrangement, indexes, and special features. The longer annotations give a general overview of the contents and years covered, suggested uses, and comparisons with related works or previous editions. The annotations are very helpful to users unfamiliar with the title. Both authors have taught children's literature on the college level. Their knowledge of the field is extensive, as evidenced by the informative annotations and depth of coverage in most of the sections. Omissions include Gale's CD-ROM Literary Index under "Indexes--Serial Publications," and general periodical indexes aside from the Reader's Guide under "Research--Print and Computerized Formats." In the section "Using Books with Young Adults," many of the titles cover books for younger children. Guides to Library Collection Development [RBB Fe 1 95] includes resources for building young adult collections. Most of the bibliographies in Young Adult Literature are also found in Guides. But Young Adult Literature lists more sources for the selection of nonprint media, especially computer software. Middle- and high-school librarians and young adult public librarians will find Young Adult Literature a valuable resource for collection assessment and selection. (Reviewed Feb 15, 1995)
