Turner analyzes the consciousness and struggle of workers considered the avant garde of organized labor in Japan: workers attempting to gain control of and operate their bankrupt companies. The study has three purposes: to debunk the myth of the passive Japanese worker; to provide insights into the everyday life of Japanese workers; and to reveal the world of small- to medium-size enterprises rarely seen by outsiders, but populated by the majority (80 percent) of the Japanese workforce. Turner's intimate knowledge of Japanese culture combined with her position as both trusted participant and detached observer results in a sensitive, detailed and fine-grained study. All levels. C. H.
