This new edition (1st ed., 1984) of Haramundanis's collection will be a very welcome addition to any library. Payne-Gaposchkin, one of the most important astronomers of the 20th century, is brought to life by a series of introductions and by her own words. Noted astronomer and author Virginia Trimble introduces the reader to Payne-Gaposchkin through a comparison with other women astronomers of her generation and more recent scientists. Contemporary Jesse Greenstein frames the scientific context of Payne-Gaposchkin's life and work, as well as adding personal recollections. Noted science historian Peggy Kidwell recounts the main events of Payne-Gaposchkin's life and career, while daughter Haramundanis gives a personal recollection of her mother and family. The bulk of the book is Payne-Gaposchkin's autobiography, "The Dyer's Hand," which explains her path to becoming an astronomer, the obstacles in her way, and how she integrated her roles as astronomer, woman, wife, and mother. She also gives the reader an important look at the Harvard College Observatory during the early and middle part of this century. A must read for all astronomy enthusiasts and students, and highly recommended for all women interested in science. K. Larsen Central Connecticut State University
