A book that needed to be written, and Harte is the right person to have written it. Too often in our schools, both at the precollege and the college and university level, mathematics is a subject for the mathematics department, ecology is a subject for the biology or environmental studies department, and never the twain shall meet. Harte not only brings them together, but does so in a logical and practical way. This is a book on problem-solving but, in so doing, it also manages to present some concepts of environmental science. This book should be read and used by all students of environmental studies and it should be an important acquisition for any research, teaching, or general academic library. -T. L.
