Part of the 12-volume "Pegasus Shakespeare Bibliographies," this "user-friendly," "handy and authoritative" book is designed to provide "a convenient, comprehensive and inexpensive guide to secondary materials--books, parts of books, and articles--for all students ... for college teachers and high school teachers, and for ordinary readers of Shakespeare." Compared to numerous existing bibliographies, Huffman's is highly selective. Selection is fairly subjective, based on the item's "high quality" or "significant influence." Neither Joseph Rosenblum's Shakespeare: An Annotated Bibliography (CH, Feb'93) nor Mark Scott's Shakespeare for Students: Critical Interpretations (CH, Oct'92) is "significant" enough to warrant inclusion, although Huffman's target audience consists of "all students." A section on basic editions and general reference works is followed by sections on the three individual plays, which are divided into seven subsections: editions, textual studies, history and intellectual backgrounds, language, criticism, stage history and performance, and bibliography. Each section is arranged by author and concludes with cross-references. Consecutively numbered entries contain bibliographic information and brief descriptive annotations. Two indexes--author/editor and subject--are provided. Recommended for general readers. P. Kujoory; University of the District of Columbia
