Summary: | Contains 26 papers written by architectural engineer Heyman over the last 30 years in connection with his work on ancient buildings. Almost all address problems arising with masonry construction, save three which address problems relating to timber roofs. Papers explore the analysis of masonry using only the equilibrium equations (and the same approach is used in discussion of timber roofs), while equations concerned with internal deformations and boundary conditions are rejected, as is the third equation of structural analysis, since stresses in masonry are usually so small that there is no danger of crushing and material properties do not enter into the calculations. Contains excellent, detailed b&w photographs and diagrams. Distributed by Ashgate. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. |
