Bird offers a thorough, well-edited, information-packed discussion of natural physical processes that control beach morphology and evolution, as well as methods used in attempts to protect and maintain beaches. He addresses the ecological and social implications of beach management in a more cursory, somewhat encyclopedic manner, and provides a global perspective by presenting numerous case studies that reflect a worldwide geographic distribution of beaches and by stressing the predicted acceleration of beach erosion and modification due to sea-level rise. The text, illustrated with numerous, good quality black-and-white photographs and line drawings, serves as an excellent resource. Information is well organized and well indexed with respect to subject, geographic distribution of case studies, and authors of published accounts of beach evolution and management, thus facilitating retrieval of data from previous studies.
