Although Aquinas thought of himself primarily as a theologian, most writers in this century have focused on his philosophy. O'Meara (Notre Dame) here presents an introduction to Thomas the theologian. In five chapters he describes Thomas's life and career, the patterns of the Summa Theologiae, its main themes, the historical development of diverse Thomistic traditions, and promising roles for Thomas's spirituality today. Overall, this book is well structured, clear, and insightful, but on occasion it is quirky in dealing with facts and in its use of language. It will serve well not only readers interested in Thomas and his theology but also those concerned with the religious and intellectual history of the last 700 years.
