Sherratt wrote the 20 papers in this valuable collection between 1972 and 1995. A well-known authority on European archaeology, Sherratt illustrates his wide-ranging interests here. Each paper is a chapter, and the volume is divided into six sections. The first and last sections discuss historical trends in the study of European archaeological remains. The four other sections include chapters on human ecology and demography, trade, consumption of goods, archaeological interpretation, and historical linguistics. The common thread tying them together is the archaeological record of European life after the adoption of agriculture more than 6,000 years ago. The papers are well written and well researched; most of them have been or will be published elsewhere. One caveat: the reasons for the overall order of paper presentation and section organization are not particularly straightforward or clear and may pose difficulty for some readers. Because of the technical nature of the papers, they will be of most interest to students of European archaeology at the upper-division undergraduate level and above. T. A. Foor University of Montana
