Description
Summary:This work argues that before the 18th century there was neither a white nor any other colour-determined race in North America. Ted Allen traces the history of plantations and slavery to demonstrate that it was the degradation of African bonded labourers into slaves that produced racism based on colour boundaries. The author reviews the pioneering attempts at enslavement of the Irish by British colonists in 17th-century Ulster, comparing this failed project with the successful endeavours in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia.
