This title follows the same format as others in the series. The short history, written for non-Hungarians, is balanced and objective. The dictionary includes items relating to historical periods but also to recent postcommunist events. Credit must be given the author for the enormity of the work and the unbiased presentation of controversial issues and figures (e.g., Daco-Roman-Romanian continuity, Antall government, Socialist-Liberal Coalition since 1994). Understandably there must be some size limitations, but there is no explanation of why some names were chosen and others omitted; Bartok and Kodaly are included, but not Liszt. In many unfortunate instances, two words run together without spacing--distracting to readers. Recommended for colleges and universities with programs in Central European studies. T. M.
