Pure Geography is an English translation (one of the translators is the author's son) of a work published first in German (1929) and then in Finnish (1930). Grano (1882-1956), a dominant figure in Finnish geography, held university posts in that country from 1911 to 1950, with the exception of a brief stint (1919-23) in Tartu, Estonia. Grano developed the concept of geography as landscape science half a century ahead of its amphi-Atlantic use. In adopting the term "regional science" to replace "regional geography," he also anticipated development in this field by several decades. The book includes a preface, preamble, biography, and reproduction of original photographs. A valuable addition to the literature on the history of geographic thought. Upper-division undergraduates and above. G. J. Martin emeritus, Southern Connecticut State University
