The fifth edition of this source book continues the standard of excellence set by the first (CH, Jul'81). The first chapter sets the stage by reviewing the importance of being an informed consumer of health care. Chapter 2 lists the outstanding consumer health information sources. Other chapters treat consumer health information available from clearinghouses, hotlines, search services, magazines, newsletters, computer services, Internet sites, professional literature, books, and pamphlets. Entries are annotated; some annotations constitute extended reviews. Materials are current, topical, and carefully researched. A notable and useful reference and collection development source, highly recommended for all libraries. C. Rinaldo; Dartmouth College

This new edition adds considerable information on electronic sources, including a chapter on the Internet covering more than 125 Web sites as well as search engines. In our review of the third edition [RBB Mr 1 90], we called this source "a fine collection development tool and an excellent bibliography for patrons seeking current information on health and medical topics."
