Gathered here are 15 articles, many of them written by Palestinians, on Palestinian women in the occupied territories of Gaza and the West Bank. The multidisciplinary articles include social and historical analyses, interviews, contemporary narratives, documents, fiction, and perspectives on the image of women in the press. The volume's focus is on the intifada (the mass mobilization and uprising of Palestinians beginning in 1987 against the Israeli occupation), the contribution of women's organizations and institutions, the spontaneous support of women, and the transformation of women's consciousness. Many contributors discuss the problematic effort for gender equality within the Palestinian nationalist struggle. The editor teaches at Birzeit University on the West Bank and has previously published on gender and the Arab world. The volume includes a lengthy introduction by Sabbagh and an appendix.
