Summary: | A history of the Jüdischer Kulturbund, which was active between 1933-41. The Kulturbund served as a framework for three theater ensembles, one opera company, two symphony orchestras, one cabaret, a theater for Jewish schools, some choirs, and numerous chamber music ensembles. It also organized lectures and art exhibitions. The Kulturbund brought together 2,500 artists and lecturers - altogether there were about 8,000 artists of Jewish origin living in Germany at the time - and the audiences were comprised of 70,000 persons in 100 German cities. Argues that although intended by the Nazis as a tool for oppression of the Jews, the Kulturbund turned into a cradle of spiritual resistance. The unification of Jews of various social backgrounds increased the sense of collectivity. Discusses the contribution of the organization's leader, Kurt Singer, and the activities of its ambivalent Nazi overseer, Hans Hinkel. In 1934 the Kulturbund became a nationwide organization, turning from a voluntary association to the only one providing work for Jewish artists. Discusses the choice of repertory in an atmosphere of severe limitations, and how the artists related to plays with Jewish content. Notes the gradual awakening of Jewish artists to their Jewish identity, due to the Nazi oppression. |
