Kitchin introduces techniques used in astronomy, at a level appropriate for undergraduate students taking a first or second level astronomy course, in this compendium of introductory discussions of a very wide range of techniques used by professional astronomers. Topics covered include standard photometric techniques; radio, x-ray, gamma ray, and neutrino astronomy; gravitational wave detection; speckle interferometry; and spectroscopy. The discussions are probably too technical for nonscience students taking a general introduction to astronomy to fulfill general education requirements, but students with some physics or mathematics background will find the book very useful. In particular, physics students who wish to learn quickly the basics of some particular astronomical technique will find this an excellent reference. The illustrations and bibliography are adequate and appropriate for a book of this type. Highly recommended for academic libraries. A. Spero; formerly, Northern Michigan University
