Matthysen presents a comprehensive view of the nuthatch family, and he offers a special study of the Eurasian nuthatch in many aspects: taxonomy, morphology and moult, habitat and population densities, foraging for food and hoarding, territory, breeding biology, finding a territory, dispersal and migration, population dynamics, and nuthatches in forest fragments. A discussion of nuthatches of the world follows. There are many graphs, charts, and drawings throughout. At the end of the book are six appendixes with scientific and common names of nuthatches, diagnostic traits of the 24 nuthatches, sex and age-related morphological variation in Eurasian nuthatches, population densities of the Eurasian nuthatch, a life-table for the Eurasian nuthatch, and scientific names of species mentioned in the text. Recommended for scientific and larger libraries. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. C. J. Pollard; emeritus, Los Angeles Unified School District
