Summary:This book deals with Shiba Kōkan, a famous painter of western-styled painting in the late Edo period and the first Japanese painter who successfully made etchings. Also an expert in astronomy and geography he was one of the pioneers who introduced western science and technology into Japan. Part I is his biography, and Part II concerns his astronomy and geography studies.
