Summary:This book is an overview of the main theories on democratic transformation and consolidation; empirical trend data on beliefs in democracy, legitimacy and support of the new democratic system; general attitudes toward the political process and its central actors; trust in political institutions; and evaluations of recent socioeconomic developments. The countries covered are the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia -- references are also made to developments in Russia and East Germany. Special attention is given to the comparability with established western democracies as well as the democratized regimes in Latin America and Southern Europe.
