For many, Froissart is a name mentioned only in passing in a survey of medieval French literature. This collection of colloquium papers by some of the leading scholars in this field comprises a general introduction by the editors and 11 essays divided into five groups: "Testimony and Textuality in the Chroniques" (with contributions by Peter F. Ainsworth, Charles T. Wood, and George T. Diller); "Framing Selfhood in Froissart's Poetry" (discussed by William W. Kibler, Keith Busby, Douglas Kelly, and Rupert T. Pickens); "Verse Romance and Poetic Renewal" (Michel Zink); "Froissart and His Contemporaries" (Elspeth Kennedy and John M. Tyler); and "Image and Reception" (presented by Laurence Harf-Lancner). Although the collection shows the reader that there is much more to Froissart than is widely known and undertakes to remedy that situation, this study is self-defeating: a thorough knowledge of all of Froissart's writings and their historical contexts is essential to understanding the points raised.
