Description
Summary:In 1861, at 15 years old, Fred Osborne joined the Massachusetts 23rd Regiment. In three months he was in the Burnside Expedition, fighting in the first amphibious battle of U.S. history, the Battle of Roanoke Island. It was a needed Union victory early in the war. His regiment also fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, New Bern, Goldsboro, Kinston and Charleston. His lively letters and other eyewitness accounts are woven into a unique Civil War story--his personal war and the war going on around him become one narrative. Fred Osborne wrote about battles and campaigns, and life in camp and on the march. He kept up with events in the war, commenting on actions by President Lincoln and generals he knew about: Sherman, Grant, McClellan, Burnside, Foster, Hunter and Butler.
