| Summary: | This book explains the role currently played by non-governmental organizations in Bangladesh.<br><br>NGOs have grown in importance from being peripheral organizations to major forces in different developmental activities. This book answers the questions: <br><br>+Why are Bangladeshi NGOs praised throughout the world, yet attacked in their own country?<br>+Why are NGOs which take foreign donations treated differently from the Government which takes foreign grants and loans, the organizations of the Islamic religion which takes foreign grants, or the business sector which takes foreign investment?<br>+Why do Bangladeshi NGOs receive adulatory visits from foreign dignitaries, but rarely from Bangladeshi dignitaries?<br><br>The author identifies three key issues in exploring these questions: first, the long established assumptions that the people of Bangladesh have about the rightful role of Government, secondly, the roles that the people of Bangladesh expect the political parties to play, and lastly the roles that Bangladeshis expect charitable organizations to play.<br><br>This book contains lessons for all concerned with the relationship between state and civil society organizations throughout the developing world.
